LAVA in Perth

wow,

this must be the nicest review we have ever had for a talk...:

PERTH, we LAVA YOU

"Happy Architecture Week Perth-ites. I just got back from the Institute’s Chris Bosse (LAVA) talk – absolutely brilliant! He was so so so good, a real inspiration. I really wish they had have made the tickets cheaper – i reckon you could have easily got quite a few hundred young architects, students and other interested people to come along – and they would not be disappointed. Its great that Perth managed to get such an awesome talent to come over here, even if he is just here for a few days. I really enjoyed hearing the way LAVA explore the concepts of space, functionality, beauty, structure and atmosphere as being essential ingredients to all their design explorations.

LAVA get a lot of their inspiration from nature and use computer modelling and calculation tools quite extensively to work through different options as solutions are investigated. Chris went through the design of the Beijing Olympic Water Cube Project. Quite amazing, the 6 000 bubbles are made up of 22 000 individually sized and individually load-calculated steel members. And there are so many integrated environmental principles, like the insulated but openable walls and ceilings, and great amounts of natural light, and its also a very functional building for the swimming competition users.

And that was just the first half hour…i could go on about them all night. If you ever get a chance to listen to any of the LAVA crew talk about their work please go, they are great!

Oh and anyone who hasn’t checked out their Masdar City Centre proposal – check it out, its beautiful!"

We are pleased to announce that LAVA won the 2009 Environmental Award at the Cityscape Awards Ceremony last night, for the MASDAR MHCC project.

The project was up against strong competition, with District 49 in Dubai by Klingmann Architects, and Sime Darby Idea House in Malaysia by Broadway Malyan. The award was for any project entered in any category that the judges felt exemplified stronger ideas regarding environmental awareness and architectural integrity.

Gary Power accepted the award on LAVA’s behalf, and in his acceptance speech he acknowledged the great contribution of the team, specifically Arup, Transsolar and Edaw.

Please see attached photos of the certificate and statuette,

Congratulations to LAVA and the whole team.

A lot of people asked us about the stunning visualisations for our Masdar project:

here they are:
all the aerial shots of the masterplan, plaza , hotel canyons and retail interiors are done in Sydney by Simon Perry and his amazing team at:
http://www.atelierillume.com.au/
Simon has an incredible taste and sense for lighting and detail.
This shows also in the Animation ( see earlier blog)

Atelierillume does many of Sydneys/Australias great visualisations for residential and commercial developments.

LAVA receives award by AAFAB Research Cluster

The FAB Research Cluster at the Architectural Association in London announces the results of the 2009 AAFAB Awards. The Award theme was ‘Designing Fabrication’ and the jury was interested in recently built projects that exemplify the innovative integration of design and fabrication processes through digitally driven design systems and protocols, and whose completion contributes to an international discourse on the use of emerging design and fabrication technologies.

The six award recipients will present their work at an AAFAB conference during London Design Festival week from 19-27 September.

Laboratory for Visionary Architecture Digital origami tigers

Digital origami tigers took over Tassie during the Ten days on the Island Festival. University of Tasmania's School of Architecture and Design students explored the potential of working with digital design in a two‐day workshop with LAVA Chris Bosse. The Japanese art of paper folding was translated into an architectural exploration of how the folding and repetition of modular elements can create complex and evocative spatial forms. The result: 250 thylacine‐shaped pieces were slotted together to form the seven sculptural mobiles in Spatial Origami in the foyer of the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery. http://www.tendaysontheisland.org/

Future Living – Michael Schumacher Tower launched in Abu Dhabi

Future Living – Michael Schumacher Tower launched in Abu Dhabi

Today at Dubai cityscape, Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher presents the design for The Michael Schumacher World Champion Tower, the first in a series of seven towers to be built worldwide.

“The Tower marks a departure from traditional architectural thinking.”, state the architects Chris Bosse and Tobias Wallisser.

The tower designers represent a new generation of architects, being responsible as associate architects for world recognised structures such as the Watercube in Beijing and the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Germany. Just one year ago, they founded LAVA, the Laboratory for Visionary Architecture, a worldwide architectural network, together with architect Alexander Rieck, innovation expert at the Fraunhofer institute in Stuttgart.

“The project brings together our previous experiences, the Mercedes-Benz Museum, a brand-owned museum with an extraordinary spatial concept exploring the latest digital design and fabrication technologies with the Water cube Beijing, an example of the highest performance of both the building and the athletes, creating a stunning atmosphere developed through the deliberate morphing of molecular science, architecture and phenomenology”, says Chris Bosse.

Inspired by the geometrical order of a snowflake and the aerodynamics of a Formula 1 racing car, the tower encapsulates speed, fluid dynamics, future technology and natural patterns of organisation. Rather than purely mimicking shapes in nature for their elegance and unpredictability, the architects learned from nature’s own geometrical orders creating highly efficient structures and intriguing spaces.

“We let the design unfold as a result of the project’s needs: optimal natural light and air distribution, maximum views, minimal structure, user comfort and an unrivalled water experience”, explains Tobias Wallisser.

The organisational principle of a minimal surface allowed the optimisation of the facade/floor area ratio and each apartment in the 59 storey luxury tower has unobstructed ocean views.

“The unique collaboration with Michael Schumacher gave us new insights. Technology, precision, speed, elegance, paired with human intuition and

extraordinary performance were a great source of inspiration for the design. Similar to the formula one operation, construction is a team sport with a lot of highly skilled experts. In this sense the architects take the driver seat in the process, taking the project to the physical limits of possibility”, adds Alexander Rieck.

The lower levels of the tower, traditionally the most difficult and least attractive area, has been reinterpreted as a series of prestigious wharf apartments, terraced similar to that of cruise ship decks. By widening the base, the tower is anchored into its surrounding water basin similar to the surrounding mangroves and nearby canals. The top Sky villas offer 270degree views opposite the new cultural district on Saadiyat Island

The building features an iconic silhouette and a facade characterised by vertical slots with private balconies. A series of reflective fins generates a vertical dynamic and gives the building a constantly changing appearance. “The fins track the sun, control the solar shading and dissolve the rationality of the plan into a continuously evolving building volume”, says Tobias Wallisser

“The facade’s continuous surface enables curvature with a lot of repetition and the potential for standardisation in the building process. State-of-the-art engineering and innovative materials will be used to achieve a fully sustainable performance”, explains Chris Bosse.

The Tower Ground Breaking will be at the beginning of 2009, with a completion date around June 2011.
